Commercial Manager, Co-Owner, and Founder at Golden Hair & Nails Bar
Hi Leslie! We are honored to have you here today; please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Leslie Talla, and I am 25 years old. I was born in Lima- Peru but now reside in Southwest Florida. My sister also lives here, and we own Golden Hair& Nails Bar. I love living here and being able to do what I do. I would not change it for anything.
That is amazing, Leslie. We understand that to do what you do; you need determination and passion. Could you tell us who was your role model or inspiration?
Well, I would say my parents. My father consistently achieves every goal he sets out, and my mother because she is a hardworking and independent woman. My mother always said, "You can have everything you want in this life, as long as you set your mind to it." She used to say you have to have goals, be perseverant and never give up. My mother was also a hair stylist, and she owns a salon in Lima-Peru.
Is this why you started your business?
Ever since I was little, I would help my mother with small things. I loved being at her salon. I believe that I was 15 years old when I officially started to learn and help her out. I found out that I loved helping her; work did not seem like work to me. Working with my mother made me realize that I wanted to own a salon, which was the main reason I do what I do today.
As you know, taking risks is a part of everyone's life. So I'm going to ask you, what role do you think taking chances has played in your life?
Leaving my comfort zone at such a young age was challenging. I emigrated from Peru to start a new life with nothing to lean back to was one of the hardest things I've ever done. To create a business with my sister at the age of 21 was something not many girls my age were doing. It was scary, but I always kept in mind my mother's words " Taking chances and risks are essential, is part of our growth and learning process ."The way I see it, it could be a lesson or a blessing, but I would get something out of it.
Why don't you tell our readers what challenges you have faced as a businesswoman and entrepreneur?
I was so young when I started this, full of questions and doubts. At 21 years old, I took a big step toward bettering my life. I understand when I see people starting their own thing. It's effortless to be disappointed when something goes wrong and you are not growing as fast as you thought. Doubt can take over your mind, and you might want to give up. But that feeling passes by, I promise. My biggest challenge has been learning that sometimes our minds play tricks, and we must be strong women and feel worthy of success and the things we want to accomplish. I was fortunate to have Erika by my side and family and friends who trusted in our vision.
Tell us about your business.
Golden Hair & Nails Bar is a place that offers professional hair styling, hair texturing, hair coloring, highlights, head and scalp treatments, and formal styling. I am an esthetician and a nail technician who focuses on providing excellent customer service. As a new initiative, I am sharing my knowledge through classes and training with whoever is interested. Our clients are amazing men and women of all ages and backgrounds. We love having them here.
If you were to ask me why I still look forward to coming to work every day and giving the best of me, the answer is straightforward; I love seeing my client's reactions after we finish a treatment or nail art.
Leslie, it has been a pleasure. Could you give a piece of advice for our readers or anyone that wants to start their own business? What could you tell a young girl or women that want to be an entrepreneur like you?
First and foremost, learn to have faith in yourself. How do you do that? By keeping the promises you make to yourself. Life will put obstacles in your path and try to make you think that is too hard. But remember this...without risk, there is no gain; without suffering, you can't appreciate happiness. I promise you! You can succeed if you work hard and focus on yourself, not on what people tell you. Be a risk taker, be intrepid. Do not let your fear or other people's fear keep you from success. Be patient and positive, and once you make it, STAY HUMBLE .
